Signs You Need a Green Pool Cleanup

The color tells us how far the pool has gone and about how long it will take to clear. Find the one closest to yours.

  • Hazy or light green

You can see the floor, but the water is dull and the walls feel slick. Chlorine dropped recently. This is the quickest kind to clear.

  • Dark green, floor gone

You cannot see the floor or the steps. Chlorine has been low for a while and the filter is likely clogged. We usually clear it without draining.

  • Brown, black water, full of leaves

The pool has sat for weeks or months. Leaves and muck have to come out before the chemicals can work, so this kind takes the longest.

Hard, dark spots stuck to the plaster in otherwise clear water are black algae. That takes a different approach. See our black algae treatment page.

Why Dallas pools turn green

Heat and sun

Hot water and Texas sun burn off chlorine fast. In July, a few days without enough chlorine is all it takes.

Storms

Heavy rain dilutes the chlorine, throws off the pH and washes dirt and fertilizer into the water. Algae feeds on it.

Spring pollen

From March through May, oak and elm pollen uses up chlorine and clogs the filter. April is when a lot of pools that were fine all winter turn green.

Hard water and stabilizer creep

Dallas tap water is hard, and every chlorine tablet adds stabilizer. After a few seasons it builds up high enough that chlorine barely works, and the pool turns green even while you keep adding it.

Equipment that quietly quit

A pump timer set too short for summer, or a salt cell coated in scale, starves the pool of circulation or chlorine while everything looks like it is running.

An empty house

With nobody home to check the chlorine, a pool can go from clear to dark green in a few weeks.

Your Green Pool Cleanup, Day by Day

Here is how a typical green pool cleanup in Dallas goes. Your part is mostly keeping the pump on.

  1. Day 1

    Green

Green, maybe opaque. You may not see the floor.

    The work

    • Full water test with commercial-grade equipment
    • Leaves and debris pulled out
    • pH brought down so the chlorine can actually work
    • Shock, then every wall, step and the floor brushed
    • Filter set to run around the clock

    Your part

Leave the pump on. Stay out of the water.

  2. Day 2

    Grey-green

Lighter and cloudy. The cloud is dead algae, which means the chlorine is working.

    The work

    • Retest, then chlorine added back as the algae burns through it
    • Brush again
    • Filter cleaned or backwashed as it loads up

    Your part

    Nothing. Let the filter run.

  3. Day 3

    Cloudy teal

Cloudy blue-green, and the floor starts to show. Lighter pools are often close to done here.

    The work

    • Dead algae vacuumed off the floor
    • Filter cleaned again
    • Chemistry checked and adjusted

    Your part

    Keep the pump running.

  4. Day 4

    Hazy blue

Hazy blue, floor visible end to end.

    The work

    • Final vacuum of settled debris
    • pH, alkalinity and chlorine brought into range

    Your part

    Stay out until we retest.

  5. Day 5

    Clear

Clear water, clean walls, chemistry back where it belongs.

    The work

    • Final water test
    • Filter left clean
    • We tell you it is ready to swim

    Your part

Swim. Weekly service keeps it this way, if you want it.

(Light green pools often finish on day 3. Heavy debris or heavy algae takes the full 5 days.)

Before We Get There

Do these before the green pool cleanup starts and it goes faster.

  1. Keep the pump running.

Moving water clears faster than still water. If the pump will not run, tell us when you book and we will look at the equipment first.

  2. Keep kids and pets out.

Green water hides the bottom of the pool. Nobody swims until it is clear and retested.

  3. Hold off on more chemicals.

If you already added something, tell us what and when so the water test makes sense.

  4. Clear the way.

Make sure we can get through the gate and reach the equipment pad.

  5. Tell us your deadline.

If the pool needs to be clear by a certain date, say so when you book and we will plan the work around it.

What moves the number higher

Heavy debris
Leaves, branches and settled muck have to come out by hand before the chemicals can work.
Heavy algae buildup
When the floor is out of sight and the walls are coated, it takes more chemicals and more brushing.

Those two things are what move the price. Whatever the number is, you agree to it before we start.

Keep it from turning green again

A pool turns green after a stretch without steady chlorine and brushing. Our weekly pool cleaning in Dallas starts at $220 a month with all chemicals included and a money-back guarantee. The same people come every week, so small problems get caught before the water turns.

Green Pool Questions We Get Every Week

Most green pool cleanups in Dallas cost between $250 and $500. Text us a few photos at (214) 997-4839, day or night, and we can usually quote it by phone. If it helps to see the pool, or you want us to, we come out for free. Either way, you get a flat price before any work starts. It runs higher with heavy debris or heavy algae on the walls and floor.

Most pools go from green to clear in 3 to 5 days. Light green or cloudy water often clears by day 3. A pool full of leaves, or one where you cannot see the floor, usually takes all 5. We can usually tell which one you have from your photos.

Usually not. Green algae lives in the water and on the surfaces, and the right chemistry, brushing and filtering clear it with the water still in. Draining comes up when stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is so high that chlorine cannot work, when the water has years of dissolved solids built up, or when the plaster needs work anyway. We test for this first and tell you before anything starts.

Chlorine dropped below what the pool needed and algae grew. In Dallas the usual causes are summer heat burning off chlorine, storms diluting the water, spring pollen, stabilizer buildup from chlorine tablets, and a pump or salt cell that stopped doing its job. In July, a missed week or two can do it on its own.

No. Green water means chlorine is too low to control bacteria, and you cannot see someone in trouble near the bottom. Keep kids and pets out until the water is clear and has been retested. We will tell you when it is ready.

Keep the pump running if it runs, keep kids and pets out, and hold off on adding more products. If you already added something, tell us what and when so the water test makes sense. Make sure we can get through the gate and to the equipment.

Shock alone rarely finishes the job. If the pH is high or stabilizer has built up, the chlorine cannot do its work. If the filter is dirty or worn, it cannot hold the dead algae. If the walls never got brushed, or the pump does not run long enough for a Dallas summer, the algae comes back. We check all of it during a cleanup.

Green algae turns the water green or cloudy and leaves slimy walls that brush off. Black algae shows up as hard, dark blue-black spots stuck to the plaster that come back in the same place after you scrub them. Black algae needs a different, longer treatment, and we handle it separately.

Yes. We do green pool cleanup in Dallas, Highland Park, University Park, Preston Hollow, Lakewood, Lake Highlands, Richardson, Plano and Garland. If you are nearby and not sure, call (214) 997-4839.
